Family Photography in Brighton and Sussex
My style of family photography is relaxed and natural, with a gentle editorial feel. I’m passionate about capturing motherhood and family life in an artistic way that makes you feel beautiful and present in the record of your children’s early years. As a mother of two myself, I know how often mums are behind the camera and missing from the photographs.
Family photographs don’t need to feel overly staged or posed. My sessions are child-led and unhurried, with plenty of time for everyone to relax and for genuine moments to unfold. I offer gentle direction to capture the most flattering images in the best possible light, but I photograph your family as you really are, so you can hold on to this time while your children are still little. I always make sure we get the classic photographs with everyone looking at the camera, but I find it’s often the in-between moments you end up treasuring most, such as a baby being cuddled or soothed, or a child reaching for your hand.
YOUR FAMILY SESSION
Many families choose to be photographed at home, where children feel at ease in their familiar surroundings. For families with a baby, I generally recommend this, as everything is close at hand. Outdoor sessions are lovely for older children who like space to explore, and a combination of both can work really nicely if you have an outdoor space close by.
I’m happy to help you choose a location. Stanmer Park is one of my favourite local spots, with gardens, open parkland and woodland, but if there’s somewhere meaningful to your family, we can use that.
Based in Brighton, I photograph families across Brighton & Sussex and at certain times of year I'm also happy to travel further afield.
Once you get in touch, I’ll send you my session guide, which takes you through how sessions work and what to expect.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my child doesn't cooperate?
My family sessions are very relaxed and don’t actually require a huge amount of cooperation from children. There’s no expectation for little ones to sit still or smile at the camera - play and movement are encouraged! As a mum of two young children myself, very little fazes me. In my experience, the best thing you can do is relax, as children tend to follow their parents’ lead.
I'm nervous in front of the camera. Will that show?
You’re not alone. Most of my clients feel nervous in front of the camera at first, and that’s completely natural . Many of the parents in my photographs felt exactly the same before their session.
Before your photo shoot I will spend time getting to know you. I ask all clients to complete a short questionnaire and I also schedule a pre-photoshoot phone call to understand what matters to you most and anything you might be worried about.
My approach is calm, relaxed and never rushed. I will give some gentle guidance and direction during the session to make sure we get the best possible photographs. You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do, that’s my job!
What should we wear for our family photographs?
Soft, muted colours photograph beautifully and help keep your images timeless. I recommend choosing a palette of three to four complementary shades, which creates a cohesive look across your family photographs. Natural fabrics such as linen, cotton, silk and wool add texture and interest without overwhelming the images. The most important thing, however, is to choose something that reflects your own personal style, so you feel comfortable.
After booking, I’ll send you a copy of my style guide with outfit guidance and suggestions, so there’s no need to worry about what to wear. I also offer all clients a complimentary planning and styling call before their session, which gives us a chance to chat through any questions, discuss your ideas and make sure you feel prepared.
How much does a family photography session cost?
My family session pricing is in my session guide, which I’ll send you when you get in touch. It covers how sessions work, what’s included and the investment, so you have everything in one place.
